Research

The Institute has been actively engaged in academic research since its founding in 1974. It has held various academic events and workshops, including international conferences, and publishes the academic journal Bulgyo yongu (Buddhist Studies). The research work is overseen by Director Rhi Juhyung and Research Director Kim Seong-cheol.

KIM Seong-cheol received his doctoral degree from the Department of Indian Philosophy at Dongguk University. When he was a graduate student, he was introduced to a Yogācāra text, She dacheng lun (Mahāyānasaṃgraha), in a graduate seminar taught by Professor Rhi Ki-yong, and eventually wrote a PhD dissertation on this text. He has been a professor at Geumgang University since 2007 and served as the director of the Center for Buddhist Studies of the university. He specializes in the Yogācāra of Indian Buddhism, but he has recently developed a deep interest in Buddhist meditation practices and experiences. His latest interests can be heard through his Saturday lectures on the KIBS YouTube channel. He published several books, including Cheonchin bosal Bulseong ron (Exposition on Buddha Nature by Vasubandhu) and Korean translations of The Ideas and Meditative Practices of Early Buddhism by T. Vetter and Buddhism and Psychotheraphy by M. Epstein.
